Teaching a German Shepherd to be obedient has a number of issues that you don’t get with other dogs. German Shepherds can be very rewarding but certainly have their own personality that makes training it something that requires special attention.

So what specifics do you need to consider when German Shepherd training?

You first have to consider just how much energy your German Shepherd has. They have trouble concentrating until you give them a considerable amount of exercise. This means you will have to try wear them out a bit before doing any obedience training.

The level of mental stimulation they need is also considerable, so don’t have just one training session a day. On top of that training session look to include training in everyday activities, like getting them to sit before crossing a road or eating.

When you are rewarding them with food also consider their diet. Because of the health issues associated with the breed it is best to give a German Shepherd a very healthy diet – to that end make sure the treats and rewards you give are healthy. GSD’s certainly do well with a lot of protein in their diet.

If you are considering dog training classes make sure that they allow German Shepherds. Many don’t because of how boisterous they are and how they interact with other dogs. Some will require you to muzzle the dog, DON’T. Muzzling them will make training far harder.

German Shepherd Training – Stopping Bad Behavior Before it Starts

Article by Andrew Bicknell

If you own a German Shepherd then you are well aware of how intelligent they are and unless they are properly trained you will own a big dog that has the capability to destroy just about anything they wish. German Shepherd Training is one of the most important things you need to do if you own or are thinking of getting a German Shepherd.

Why?

Because German Shepherds are so smart they get bored easily and unless they are trained to be obedient and know right from wrong they will find ways to entertain themselves that may be destructive to things you don’t want destroyed.

What may be entertaining to them may not be so entertaining to you. Have you ever come home and found all your potted flowers strewn about the yard, your pots over turned and a happy German Shepherd in the middle of it all? Or you leave your favorite pair of sandals or flip-flops in the yard and before you know it you look out the back window and your dog is prancing around the yard with your shoe in his mouth? Or, and this is one of my favorites, you’ve just planted a new tree in the yard and the next day your German Shepherd decides to dig up one side of the tree.

As an owner of German Shepherds this is just a few of the things our latest puppy has done. The list could go on and if you’re an owner of one of these wonderful dogs you know what I’m talking about. The thing is this is not the dogs fault. They are quick learners and the sooner you train them to understand what they can and can’t do the sooner they will quit destroying your valuable possessions.
